Krishna festival diversifies

Annual Chariot Festival includes lion dancers, bagpipes

VANCOUVER - Beach Avenue was filled Sunday with colourfully dressed Krishna devotees who gathered to sing, dance and worship deities atop dazzling thrones at the city's 34th annual Chariot Festival.

This year's festival, which included a parade, puppet shows, concerts, and a free vegetarian feast, was bigger and more diverse than ever, said its organizer, Jay Govinda.

Scottish bagpipers and Chinese lion dancers led three ornate chariots carrying incarnations of Jagannatha, Lord of the Universe.
