Happy World Vegetarian Awareness Month

Happy World Vegetarian Awareness Month - October World Vegetarian Day - October 1st

World vegetarian day has been observed since 1977 bringing together vegetarians from all over the world for a common cause. It brings awareness to the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. We're observing growing trends, especially since Foot and Mouth and Mad Cow diseases, but about one million people a year become vegetarians in the US alone, and millions in Europe, Australasia too. Everything that we are doing is making a difference, and every little bit helps.

Mythotherapy for relief to humanity

The modern materialist bases his idea that existence is only chaos. The Vedas refute out of hand the idea that everything is chaos and present a cosmological vision of a cosmology that is not found parallel in humanity, and which also coincides to a large degree with modern scientific discoveries. Mythotherapy creates a circumstance which we call the mystical healing cross. This cross is produced when the myth, the revelation, crosses with the logo, or the appreciation of the human intellect. Mythotherapy is in no way an imposition which tries to bring in people through fear into an institutional dogma.

Spiritual tourism can attract visitors to Trinidad & Tobago

SPIRITUAL tourism has become a new buzzword in the travel and tours circuit around the world including Trinidad and Tobago with its beautiful temples which have the potential for attracting foreign visitors outside the carnival season, according to Dr Kumar Mahabir.

It is especially for this reason that the Indo-Caribbean Cultural Council (ICC) adopted the theme "Temples and Tourism in Trinidad" for this year's edition of its Divali magazine.

He referred to the Hare Krishna temple in Longdenville which, he said, houses an altar of breathtaking beauty with craft items in the form of deities, saints, peacocks and flowers and Penal where there is the Shiva Temple where scores of devotees converge weekly to seek a symbolic stone's reputed healing powers.

Produced by George Harrison and recorded at Apple Studios in London (1970)

This songs are very special. They connect the Vedic wisdom with western know-how. That's a principle Srila Prabhupada told us about and which he demonstrated by his own example over and over again. To greet the deities the song Govinda still is played every morning in each ISKCON temple all over the world. Srila Prabhupada wrote about this song in a letter: "The record is so nice that I am playing it at least once in a day and it is giving me transcendental pleasure with tears in my eyes. I am sure this record will be the first-class 'hit' as already opined by the experts."
Indeed the songs Govinda and Hare Krsna Mantra reached the top 10 in record charts throughout the world.

Dandiya spectacle!

MORE THAN 2,000 dance enthusiasts are expected to attend an evening of non-stop dandiya festivities at a celebration organised by the Indian Ladies Association (ILA) later this month.

"The grand dandiya festivities will be an exciting package of music, dance, colour and vibrancy as people dance with colourful sticks to traditional dandiya music in ethnic costumes," said ILA entertainment secretary Shagufta Munshi.

The origin of these dance performances, or raas, can be traced back to the life of Lord Krishna, who is one of the chief gods in the Hindu religion.

He spoke recently to Daily Sun about this religion, what makes it unique, why they are vegetarians and lots more.

Thousands of years ago in India a man named Rama was king. He was the most virtuous man in the land, the perfect symbol of mortality. His wife, Sita, was equally beautiful and virtuous.

They are part of the Ramayana, the story of good versus evil that is the highlight of the Festival of India today at the Hare Krishna temple in Spanish Fork.

The story says that one day an evil giant, Ravana, kidnapped Sita and took her to an island, now known as Sri Lanka. Rama, who had been exiled to the forest, could not send his army to save his wife

Geeta updesh most relevant for peace & tranquility: Narayan Sayee

JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 13- The teachings of Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta are most relevant in the prevailing global socio-economic environment created by the blind race of technological development responsible for mounted stress and strain on human mind which has made entire human race a slave of mechanical age.

This was stated by Swami Narayan Sayeeji at his day-long sermon delivered before about 40,000 to 50,000 devotees at saint Shri Asa Ram Bapuji's ashram at Bhagwati Nagar today. In his enlightening, thought provoking and breath takingly impressive parvachan, Swami ji cautioned the people against excessive indulgence in the worldly affairs and materialistic kingdom which has changed entire human race in a living machine. Referring to the sermons of Lord Krishna to Arjun, Swami ji reiterated that the human beings have to make actions without expectations of the results. He said that our good or bad actions or karmas decide our destiny.

The third artiste presented an Abhinaya Kede Chhanda Jaanlo Sakhi composed by the famous Oriya poet Banamali. This composition depicted the engrossing episodes of Krishna Leela or Krishna’s adorable mischief. Vividly portrayed are the killing of demons like Bakasur, Kaliya demon and Viswarup Darshan as also Mother Yashoda’s astonishment at her son’s divinity. Krishna and the other characters were beautifully enacted by Lekha in a quick reversal of roles.

A People's Police for Independent India

By far the most important AREA that has been identified for the Indian Police to be more of the people’s police is on the improvement of their relationship with the public, as without the best image i.e. "faith and love" of the public thereby enlisting their popular support and co-operation no police work can effectively be achieved. For keeping the "police-public-relationship" at best what is required is to ensure that every policeman performed his duties "correctly and patiently", and also most "honestly" always considering himself as a part or constituent member of the "community or the people or the nation", and not something outside it. For the achievement of such a goodwill what is imperative is to instill confidence in them by showing that they (policemen) are always there to help them (the public), particularly during critical times, for it is only when some sort of "FAITH" is established then comes the feeling of "love" as is very rightly expressed in the saying - "when there is faith, there is love, and when there is love there is peace" - to establish always peaceful situation or atmosphere amongst the people is the "foremost duty" that is entrusted upon the police which is termed as the "maintenance of public peace and order" - in this regard it may be relevant to mention here and remember the divine teaching imparted by Lord Krishna to Arjuna as is in the Bhagavad-Gita, chapter 4, verse 18 (Gyan yoga) - which says "KARMANYO-KARMA YAH PASHED-KARMANI, CHA KARMA YAH CHHA BUDHIMAN MANUSHESHU CHHA YUKTA KRITSNA-KARMAKRIT" - he who finds, in the midst of intense activity peace, and in the midst of greatest peace intense activity, he is a perfect man - an indication that may be established from the divine teaching and message is that while carrying out his prescribed duties one should always maintain his calmness of mind i.e. peace disregard of their results, and it is only with a peaceful mind that one can carry out his actions most peacefully.

Of hospitality, crafts & cosmos - three in one Mayapur plan

A $500-million ski village project in Manali, a Rs 283-crore tourism hub in Mayapur, a beach resort in Orissa, a cultural project in Rajasthan… All in a day’s work at Alfred Brush Ford (ABF) International — on paper, that is.

The company of Henry Ford’s great-grandson was back in town on Wednesday with more grand plans for India’s tourism industry. The word from ABF International’s B-team — vice-president Alister Taylor and director John Robert Sims — was that the ski village in Himachal Pradesh had already been “initiated”, projects in Orissa and Rajasthan were being “researched”, and the Bengal extravaganza was ready to get off the ground next year.

Going by what Taylor and Sims had to say — largely on the lines of what Alfred B. Ford, or Ambarish Das of Iskcon fame has been saying for some time now — the Mayapur project would be three-pronged, with a village industry park, a tourist hospitality complex and a Vedic planetarium. Each would be on around 20 acres of land and funded through foreign direct investment.

The planetarium will “showcase the ancient cosmology of India”. Ecologically sound, fitting in with the local architecture and a feeling of local ownership and community connection are important for the success of the project, felt Taylor and Sims.

The Speaking Tree: A Tribute to Radha's Sweet Love for Beloved Krishna

How can one achieve love-communion with God? This yearning — often compared to that of a pining lover — has poured forth in poetry and song, myth and fable.

Among them is the story of Radha's yearning for Krishna. With madhura bhakti or sweet devotion, Radharani achieved atmasamyogam or union with the Divine. When we call Him Radhakrishna, we acknowledge this love-union.

Indian tradition enumerates three paths for a soul to experience this union: jnana marga or way of knowledge; karma marga or way of action and bhakti marga or way of devotion. Of these three, the path of devotion is filled with a rare sweetness and ecstasy experienced by the devotee, bhakti.

Britain celebrates Krishna's birthday

Immigration Minister, Tony McNulty MP, was among several dignitaries who celebrated the religious festival of Krishna Janmasthami at the Shri Venkateswara Balaji Temple in Birmingham. The temple is developing into one of Europe's largest Hindu temples.

The celebrations were organised by Dr Narayan Rao of Hindu Council UK, and the guest list consisted of dignitaries from the political, business and religious communities, including Adrian Bailey MP, Lord Bhattacharyya, Lord King, Sri and Gopi Hinduja, Sangar and Swami Nirliptanandaji.

He concluded by saying that as regards the contribution of the Hindu community in the UK, it is not just confined to temples, celebrations and spirituality, but that the Hindu community gives a lot back to the country and respects other communities. "Our strength as a nation is our respect for each others' diversity", he said.

SC allows Delhi govt to adopt Yamuna plan

Wednesday, September 7, 2005 (New Delhi):

The Supreme Court today allowed the Delhi government to adopt the action plan to clean river Yamuna, in line with the steps taken by the British government to clean river Thames.

The Court approved the action plan for constructing sewage treatment plants at all points where major drains meet the river Yamuna, so that no untreated sewage gets discharged into the river.

The Yamuna, considered one of the holiest rivers in India, has today become one of the most polluted as well, and its water declared unfit for drinking.

Even in small cities like Mathura, devotees have been ritually pouring milk into the holy river for centuries, believing it can heal their illnesses and cleanse their sins.

But it's not just milk. People also throw sweets and sindoor, wrapped in plastic bags, all of which makes the river highly polluted.

Krishna Temple raising money for relief efforts

Whenever the building is open, the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple on the southern edge of Spanish Fork has a buffet available for anyone who needs a meal.

"That's basically our policy worldwide, that no one within 10 miles of our temple should go hungry," said temple vice president Caru Das.

That policy is the reason the Hare Krishna Food for Life program distributes meals to people who need it. While the organization brings meals to people every day of the year, the number of Hurricane Katrina victims needing food has caused an surge in the services. Das said the temple in Spanish Fork is raising money to send to the national organization and will match every dollar it receives until the Festival of India Sept. 17.

"What inspires us to do what we do is not only feelings of humanitarianism, but the food that we give to people is consecrated in our temple," he said, adding Krishnas believe that by doing this, they are nourishing the soul as well as the body.

About $500 have been raised since Monday, when the program was started. Das hopes to raise several thousand dollars, which is about what they raised for the tsunami in Southeast Asia last year and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City.

Kolkata, September 7: Scientists from NASA will join hands with Vedic scholars to explore mysteries of ancient Indian cosmology at a Vedic planetarium about 100 km from Kolkata, once the initiative of Alfred Brush Ford, scion of the US automobile giant Ford, bears fruit.

Planned at Mayapur, an ancient seat of Vaishnavism and global headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), the planetarium forms part of a Rs 283- crore economic initiative by Ford, an ISKCON devotee.

Ford's company, ABF International, will promote the project along with a village industries park and a tourism hospitality complex at Mayapur visited by lakhs of tourists each year from India and abroad.

"This will be unique project showcasing the scientific evidence on ancient cosmological descriptions of space. We have conducted a series of research and found that the distance between planets, as mentioned in Vedic cosmology, are profoundly accurate with the findings of modern studies,'' said ABF International senior vice-president Alister Taylor recalling that Mayapur was a famous seat of scientific and cultural learning in medieval Bengal, he said, "through our research, we realised that something very interesting (cosmological studies) was happening here."

Monday Hindu

Rejina Jinaraj wanted her fiancee to know what to expect. She wanted him to get a glimpse of the world she once called home, a world rich with Hindu traditions.

"He's never seen it," Jinaraj said of the Indian traditions she grew up with in the southwest Indian state of Kerala.

Jinaraj left this behind in 2001 when she came to study at the University of Utah. But on Saturday, Jinaraj, 22, her husband-to-be Ryan Sincic, 29, and their friends made their way to Spanish Fork to the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple for their Betrothal Ceremony, where those traditions live on.

Not much is spoken of Hindus in Utah County. Not much is even said of Hindus in Utah. But they're here, and they have their own temple modeled after the famous Indian palace, Kusum Sarovar, which means "temple on a lake of flowers."

Joshi assails move to distort Indian history

Monday, September 05, 2005, New Delhi: Former human resource minister Murli Manohar Joshi on Sunday assailed the move to distort the Indian history by the NCERT and demanded that school syllabus, which described Lord Ram and Lord Krishna as 'imaginary figures,' should be scraped immediately.

He said: "Our children are taught that Rama and Krishna are imaginary figures, Aryans came from outside and they consumed beef." Mr Joshi, a senior BJP leader, was addressing a gathering on the occasion of the 27th foundation day of Kendriya Arya Yuvak Parishad.

Mr Joshi, who was the former HRD minister during the NDA rule, said instead efforts should be made to "save" India's culture, history and religion. He demanded that the Vedas, Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads should be included in the school curriculum.

Vrindavan artist’s ode to Lord Krishna through exotic Kanhai gold paintings

God can be worshipped in many ways. Some do it through music, some by following rituals, and some through paintings, which was evident at the Kanhai Gold Painting Workshop in Kolkata. Just one look at the Kanhai paintings will make you feel there has been a reincarnation of Lord Krishna.

Kanhia Chitrakar, who has been considered the pioneer of Kanhai Gold Paintings, is conducting a month long workshop in Kolkata, where participants are made familiar with the art of making the distinctive gold paintings.

"With the blessing of God I realised that painting was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. First I started with portraits, and then, slowly added gold to the paintings. That's how the birth of Kanhai painting came into existence", said Kanhia Chitrakar.

Lord Krishna in 2005 Nepal

- If Lord Krishna reincarnates in 2005 Nepal to harness his Mahabharata wisdom and experience to resolve our conflicts, would he not find himself in a state of quandary?

Lord Krishna is a legendary figure in Mahabharata epic for craftsmanship in war and peace. The Gita was the product of the Kurukshetra battlefield. He tried his best to clinch peace between two belligerent sides, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He failed in his peace mission but he had no regret because he believed it was his duty to try but success was not under his control.

The many moods of Mahabharata

Exploring the woman’s world in the Mahabharata with Draupadi at the centre. Rituparno Ghosh’s “most difficult film” will roll out of city-based RPG Group’s Saregama Films early next year. The Hindi-English bilingual called Draupadi is aimed at both the national and international audiences.

“Even Satyajit Ray had attempted the Mahabharata but backed out due to the complexity of the relationships which is so difficult to convey to an international audience. I want to work with the characters of Mahabharata, and not the story. Indian audiences are familiar with the storyline, but international audiences will not know the plot. Striking a balance between the two will be the most difficult task for me,” said Rituparno on Tuesday.

Draupadi, Krishna and Ved Vyas will be the three significant characters Rituparno will focus on. Chandril Bhattacharya, of Chandrabindoo, is working with him on the script that is likely to be ready in the next two months. Only then will the cast be finalised.

Radhastami celebrated worldwide

Radharani's birthday is considered one of the most auspicious days of the year by Vaishnavas. Radha is the eternal consort of Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Radharani is described in the shastra as the pleasure potency of Krishna. Krishna is Param Brahman. He cannot
enjoy anything material. He has to create the source of enjoyment by His own spiritual potency. That is Radharani. Devotees of Lord Krishna sing on this day: "Jaya Radhe" to please her. If she is pleased then Krishna is pleased. So devotees are very busy on this day to please and serve Radharani understanding that without her mercy no one can approach Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Jaya Radhe! Jaya Radhe!.
